How Many Amps Is a Socapex?
1. Introduction
SOCAPEX, also known as SOCA, typically refers to a 19-pin connector. This type of connector is widely used in the entertainment industry like television and stage lighting audio, providing reliable power supply for various performance events by connecting to specialized cables.
This article offers a brief introduction to these connectors and their corresponding cables to assist users in selecting the appropriate model.
First, I’ll answer two frequently asked questions:
-
How many amps is a socapex?
16A to 25A, determined by the cable size used -
How many circuits does a Socapex cable have?
6 circuits

2. What Is Socapex?
Socapex is a multi-pin connector available in male and female versions. This connector type makes temporary stage power wiring safer, neater, and simpler.
Typically a 19-pin power distribution connector, it supplies power to 6 circuits. Every three pins supply power to one circuit, with the remaining pin serving as a spare. This design explains why Socapex supports six circuits.
Typically, we use a 19-core cable with this connector to form a soca cable.
However, many suppliers may actually use 14-core or 13-core cables instead.
-
The difference lies in these six circuits sharing a single ground wire.
-
This clearly poses certain safety risks.
-
However, a 14-conductor or 13-conductor Socax cable cost is low than a 19-conductor one.
-
A 19-conductor soca cable weighs nearly 20kg, which is somewhat excessive for installation and wiring.

3. How Many Amps Can a Socapex Carry?
The maximum current rating for a Socapex connector is 25 amps, requiring a 12 AWG cable.
-
20 amps corresponds to a 2.5mm² cable
-
16 amps requires a 1.5mm² cable
In Europe, 2.5mm² is more common, while the US prefers 12 AWG. 1.5mm² soca connectors are uncommon.
Can I use 19x 4mm² cable?
Generally not. The 19x4mm² cable cannot be installed due to its excessive outer diameter. 12 AWG cable is the maximum cable size compatible with the connector.

3. What Type of Bulk Cable Should I Use for Socapex?
Two common types are available:
1. Rubber cable, type H05RN-F
2. High Flexible PVC Cable, type H05VV5-F
Both cables are highly flexible and resistant to oil and abrasion.
The difference lies in:
-
The PVC cable being lighter and easier to route. PVC is prone to damage from sharp objects
-
The rubber cable can prevent the damage from shap objects. Rubber cable is significantly heavier
If you’re working in harsh or complex environments, I recommend rubber. For a temporary indoor stage setup, the PVC cable is sufficient.
